Best DnD One-Shot Adventures (Pre-Written + Free) for 2026
The Best DnD One-Shot Adventures for 2026
Updated May 2026 ยท 4 min read
The short answer
For levels 3-5, in 4 hours: The Sunken Hall ($14) โ full module with map, NPCs, and rising-water mechanic for built-in pacing. For free options: WotC's "Lost Mine of Phandelver" intro adventure (released free in Basic Rules).
What makes a one-shot work
- Runs in one session (3-5 hours). Any one-shot that needs "split across 2 sessions" is mislabeled.
- Has a built-in time pressure. A clock or counter that creates urgency โ rising water, an arriving army, a dying NPC.
- Self-contained. Doesn't require knowledge of your home campaign.
- Multiple resolution paths. Players who go in expecting combat should be able to talk their way out (and vice versa).
Our top picks
1. The Sunken Hall โ $14 (Keepr)
Levels 3-5. 4-hour module. 6 keyed locations in a half-flooded dwarven mead hall. Rising-water mechanic creates urgency. Multiple endings (combat, negotiation, escape). Hooks into a longer arc if you want to continue. โ View on Shopify
2. WotC's Lost Mine of Phandelver (free)
Technically a starter set adventure but the first chapter ("Goblin Arrows" โ "Cragmaw Hideout") is a perfect introductory one-shot. Free with WotC's Starter Set or in their Basic Rules PDF.
3. Death House (WotC's Curse of Strahd intro)
Levels 1-3. Gothic horror tone. 4-6 hours. Excellent for testing whether your group enjoys horror tone. Free download via WotC.
4. The Wild Sheep Chase (free, classic)
Levels 5-7. Long-running community favorite. 3 hours. Available free on r/DnDBehindTheScreen archives.
5. The Delian Tomb (free, from Matt Colville)
Level 1-2. 4 hours. Often the FIRST adventure run by new DMs. Available free on Colville's "Running the Game" video series.
Why we made our own one-shot
Most existing one-shots assume the DM has 2-3 hours to prep. We wanted one that runs cold โ drop it into ANY existing campaign, or run it as a standalone, no prep needed beyond reading the module once. That's the Sunken Hall's design constraint.

The Sunken Hall is our first. If it sells well, we'll publish a new one each quarter. Drop a review or message us to vote on what setting/level we should tackle next.
