How it works: Enter your party size and average character level. The calculator returns the XP budget for each difficulty tier per the 5e Dungeon Master's Guide. Multiply monster XP by the adjustment factor based on how many monsters you use against the party.

Worked example
4 characters, level 3. Medium XP budget = 600 XP.
You want a hard encounter (900 XP budget).
Pick 3 CR 1 monsters (200 XP each = 600 XP base) × 2 multiplier = 1,200 XP-adjusted.
That's just over the deadly threshold (1,400 XP) — close to deadly.
Drop to 2 CR 1 monsters: 400 × 1.5 multiplier = 600 XP-adjusted. That's exactly medium difficulty.
You want a hard encounter (900 XP budget).
