The short answer
If you're starting out, trying us out, or playing a short campaign: buy a PDF. If you've been DMing or playing the same character for 6+ months and you know you'll keep going: buy a hardcover. The two complement each other — many of our customers buy a PDF first and a hardcover 3-6 months later.

Question 1: How long will you use this notebook?
- < 3 months: PDF (you'll outgrow it before a hardcover earns its place)
- 3-12 months: Either — depends on questions 2 and 3
- 1+ year: Hardcover (it'll be on your shelf forever)
Question 2: How much do you value printing/binding vs. having paper today?
- I'd rather print at home and start today: PDF ($5-$14, instant download)
- I want a finished book delivered: Hardcover ($18-$34, ~5-7 day shipping)
Question 3: Will this notebook hold sentimental value?
- Yes — this is "my character's book" or "my campaign's book": Hardcover. The medium IS the message.
- No — I just want functional tools: PDF. Print what you need, throw away what you don't.
